I plan to go in June this year . Thinking Ho Chi Minh City (south ) followed by Ha Long Bay (north).

Responses have been a good read as ever! sounds like some must see places - Any activities / adventure like things worth doing ? e.g. trekking , diving etc? just to mix it up a bit?

You smell that? Do you smell that? Napalm, son. Nothing else in the world smells like that. I love the smell of napalm in the morning. You know, one time we had a hill bombed, for 12 hours. When it was all over, I walked up. We didn't find one of 'em, not one stinkin' dink body. The smell, you know that gasoline smell, the whole hill. Smelled like . . . victory....

Someday this war's gonna end.....

Stayed in Hanoi and the Cat Ba Island.

If want to look at Ha Long Bay area then stay few nights on Cat Ba and get day boat trip from there into Lan Ha Bay. You are basically seeing the same as the Ha Long trips but without the crowds as coming at it from a different direction. I'd say it is a must. Hanoi was great too

Re: Vietnam
I went to Hue, mainly to test whether the Bun Bo Hue (spicy Vietnamese beef soup) is better than the one they serve up in Hackney.

It isnt.

Apart from that they have the imperial city, which theyve been slowly rebuilding since it was destroyed during close combat fighting during the war.

Always think the same about Orange Tree Hill where Romford suddenly stops. Go round the corner after the fire station and it's all fields and little villages.

Do the 3 day/2 night Halong Bay cruise. Well worth paying a bit extra to have an extra day there

Ninh Binh is a good day-trip to do out of Hanoi

From HCMC get down to the Mekong Delta for a bit

Dalat is a bit different

I've heard nothing but good about Hoi An, as well as mainly good things about Hue, though I've yet to visit the middle (I've been to north and south ends a fair few times though)

Re: Vietnam
May seem a bit of a strange observation but one thing that struck me about Hanoi was how abruptly the city "ended" and the countryside began.

Like literally one side of a building would be your typical manic SE Asian street with zillions of mopeds and buzzing activity etc. and the other side would be fields with working cattle and mediaeval technology as far as you can see.

Seemed like literally 20 minutes outside of it in any direction by scooter and you'd find a really picturesque village or bridge or river or something that's worth checking out.

And fuck all in the way of loud pissed backpackers in RUN BKK vests and harem pants shouting about how this is "real travelling" and making a nuisance of themselves like guided tours to these places tend to attract.

I recommend going to ninh binh instead of ha long bay.

ha long bay is a completely guided experience at this point and its impossible to get away from ferries full of selfie addicts. ninh binh you just rent out a scooter for the day, buzz out of town and within 15 minutes you're basically in jurassic park.

lying dragon mountain was a massive highlight if you have the constitution for getting up it.

Thought Da Nang was a bit of a dump tbh. Like Benidorm with Chinese and Russians.

Re: Vietnam
Agree Hanoi is great. Saigon is now like many other big city in asia (certainly in the centre of it anyway)

Cu Chi tunnels are worth it though. As is Halong Bay and Hue is great if you like the Citadel and its part in the Tet offensive during Vietnam war etc. (Or the American war as Vietnamese call it!)
